Slaty-backed Gull

Larus schistisagus

Description:

A very dark-backed gull of east Asia, only a vagrant to North America. Note the broad white wing edges, the pale eye with a red border, and (not visible here) deep pink legs and "string of pearls" wingtip pattern. Western Gulls on the northern Pacific coast are paler than those from southern California, so confusion with that species is less likely the further north you go.
