Australian Pelican

Pelecanus conspicillatus

Description:

A large bird with a wingspan of up to 2.5m and a beak reaching up to 50cm in length. The beak is pink with a throat pouch. This is not really used for storing food (mainly fish), the fish is held here and manipulated until the head is swallowed first. The beak also helps detect food in murky water.

Habitat:

Found in open fresh and saltwater throughout Australia.
