Largest fly in the world

Gauromydas heros

Description:

This is the largest fly in the world, that can reach body lengths of 7 centimeters. Their larvae live in nests of Atta spp. and Acromyrmex spp. and feed on larvae of beetles living in these colonies. Adults feed on flowers nectar and are mimic of wasps Pepsis sp.

Habitat:

Brazilian Atlantic Forest

Fantastic find Andre. Thanks for sharing this. Sometimes fly maggots are bigger than the adults... I wonder about this one. :)

Are you kidding me. Why is that thing staying on your hand? I had no idea that a fly could get that big. I am really glad we don't have them in California.
