Black-winged Stilt (adult with juveniles)

Himantopus himantopus

Description:

Adult Black-winged Stilts are a "large black and white wader with long orange-red legs and a straight black bill. It has black on the back of the neck, a white collar and a red iris.[(the one at the back)]" Juveniles, or "[y]oung Black-winged Stilts lack black on the back of the neck and have grey-brown wings and back, speckled with white. They have a smudged grey crown, which extends down the back of the neck as the birds get older." (Birdlife Australia)

Habitat:

Wading around in the water at the Waste Water Wetlands.

Notes:

They are often at these wetlands and when the ducks all take off, these birds might take off - to the other side of the water - and just carry on.

I've also spotted this species at Sydney's Homebush Bay. They're lovely birds, and they certainly get around.
