Florida scrub jay

Aphelocoma coerulescens

Description:

Medium sized bird 9 to 12 inches in length. Iridescent blue to black with patches of white gray and tan. Black eyes and beek.

Habitat:

Lives in desert like scrub habitat of white sand, pygmy live oaks, and pine trees.

Notes:

I went on this adventure with one purpose, to revisit this location and see if the scrub jays were still present. Although drastically and noticably declined in numbers due to residential development the individuals observed were very healthy. One thing I have to mention is the extreme "tameness" of these wild birds. While taking their pictures they landed on my head and neck and tried to preen my hair. They took peanuts directly from my hands. My trunk was open and had I not been aware they would have gladly removed more peanuts and other items from it too.

Thank you Maria dB. Love to do shots of the animals face and eyes. These guys are birds that anyone who can meet them should. Probably human familiarity and enjoyment is the only way to keep them around. I have watched these wonderful birds decrease from the time of my arrival in Florida in 2003 until present. This should be the Florida state bird.
