A worldwide community photographing and learning about wildlife
Calyptorhynchus funereus
A large parrot, reaching 48cm in length. Mostly black, with yellow cheek patch and yellow panels in the tail feathers. Males have a pink eye-ring, females, grey. These are very noisy birds. They are quite often heard before seen.
The Yellow-tailed Black-Cockatoo inhabits a variety of habitat types, but favours eucalypt woodland and pine plantations. South east Australia from near Rockhampton in Queensland down to Victoria. Also found in Tasmania. I saw a flock around 10-12 individuals feeding on Banksias and Casuarinas right on the beach.
