Yup, looks like a species of Magnolia to me as well. Star Apple has a much thinner/ flatter and softer leaves than the Magnolias.

The reddish contrast with the green was why I posted it. :) They are striking even from a distance.
I'm certainly far from being an expert on plants, but it looks like a type of Magnolia to me?
