Description:

The Calico Pennant or Elisa Pennant is a dragonfly found in North America, in the Pennant genus of dragonflies. Its average length is 1.2 in (3.0 cm). Males have red heart-shaped markings on the dorsal side of the abdomen that is yellow in the females. Their wings have three red areas: one at the tip, one in the middle, and one large area close to the body.

Habitat:

Ponds, lakes with marshy borders in Eastern and central North America. This one was observed in an open, grassy area near a small pond and stream.

Notes:

Flight period is March to October in much of ranger, June to August in north. Males are not territorial, perch along edges of ponds, on the lookout for incoming females. Pairs perch on vegetation near water while mating, oviposit as a pair.
