Needlefish

Strongylura notata

Description:

They are elongated with extended jaws that form a long, fragile beak. They have only one dorsal and anal fin placed far back.

Habitat:

The redfin needlefish is a tropical to subtropical species, preferring warm coastal waters. That being said, it was spotted in what could be called a pond that is fed by a natural spring but is also tidal influenced by the Gulf of Mexico. It is a County Park that was a private swimming resort for tourist from the 1930's. The collapse of that enterprise allowed saltwater intrusion. Now the construction of the park allows species from the Gulf to swim into the pond through a small inflow/outflow culvert and get trapped for a period of time before they figure how to get back out.
