Gopher Tortoise

gopherus polyphemus

Habitat:

scrub, fields, hammocks, sandy dry areas.

Notes:

In the first pic shows one about mid-morning perhaps warming up to leave its burrow. The other pics show one I saw on the same trail the previous afternoon digging or clearing out a burrow. The location on the map is for the 2 last pics. First pic spotted a little further down the trail. NOTE: In Florida gopher tortoises are on the Endangered Species List, categorized as a Threatened Species. Read more here: http://www.gophertortoise.org/tortoise/f...

LivanEscudero you are right on the money. I am convinced that the burrow that I have the pictures of are defiantly from a Gopher Tortoise. Thank you so much for thinking of my picture and identifying it for me.
