Giant Leaf-footed Bug

Acanthocephala declivis

Description:

Large gray bug with knobby "shoulders." The wide blades on its hind legs do look like leaves. Notice also the orange tips on the antennae. It's about 1¼" long.

Habitat:

Rainforest, Maya Mt. foothills, mid-canopy

Notes:

This bug landed on my veranda, and sat for about 20 seconds on the veranda rail for its photo, then squatting at a steep angle before taking off at a steep incline to land several yards overhead in a tree. The side photo was just before it launched.

Ah! My mistake -- not an assassin bug, but the common name, genus and species are correct. Thanks for the correction.

Hi Irene, great spotting. But it's not an assassin bug (family Reduviidae) - it belongs to the family Coreidae.
