Black shelf fungus

Description:

Glossy dark leathery thin fungi growing like a plaque along the wood and shelving to form fan-shaped brackets. The dark surface showed zones and the outer margins were white. The underside showed a haphazard arrangement of angular, circular and elongated pores and furrows.

Habitat:

Growing on a damp decaying log - Sassafras or myrtle beech.

Notes:

Resembles a thin-maze polypore. Hope to get it identified soon.
