Snowshoe Hare

Description:

The Snowshoe Hare has turned white for winter (camouflage), but we had no snow so he stuck-out like a sore thumb in the background. 15-18 inches. tail 2 inches. large hind feet. white. brown in summer. Beginning in September the brown hairs begin turning white and it will last for three months. In March the reverse process begins and the hairs turn brown. This Hare was hiding under the evergreen tree that is shown in front of the image. He just stood for a long time until I got ready to take the picture and my dog barked frightening him.

Habitat:

Northern and alpine forest, swamps, brush areas.

Notes:

It did snow the next day luckily for the Hare.
