Indian rhododendron

Melastoma malabathricum

Description:

Indian rhododendron is a common plant found in Baddegana Wetland park. It grows as a medium shrub. The flowers are pink-violet in colour and is 6-8 cm in diameter. Contains two types of stigma. The fruit is a berry, which when ripe breaks irregularly to expose its soft, dark blue pulp and orange seeds as shown in the last picture.

Wetland shady habitat.
