Mediterranean stinkbush / βρωμοκλάδι

Anagyris foetida

Description:

Common deciduous shrub that sometimes can be as tall as a tree up to 4m. Complex leaves of three leaflets that have bad smell when crushed. Flowering December - April. All parts of the plant are toxic, especially the seeds because they contain the teratogenic alkaloid anagryrine.

Habitat:

It is a plant of the Mediterranean zone but eastwards extends to Iran. Found on limestone slopes and field boundaries up to 1200m. It resists intense grazing areas -animals usually avoid it because of the bad smell-, while bees often visit its flowers.
