Cannonball Tree

Couroupita guianensis

Description:

Very large tall tree to 10m. Large, distinctive, showy flowers approx 11cms diameter. Produces heavy 'cannonball-like' fruit, very hard and heavy, 15-20cms diameter. The fruit falls from the tree and cracks open when it hits the ground when mature, often causing the sound of a small explosion. (If standing under the tree, one could experience a splitting headache)

Habitat:

Growing in a rural garden near Crystal Cascades QLD

Notes:

Native to tropical northern South America and to southern Caribbean

Very cool! Wouldn't it be neat if you could video tape one of the fruits falling, then play it in slow-mo!
