Description:

An early-blooming member of the madder family, Rubiaceae. Flowers are about a quarter inch (0.6 cm) across. The petals are purplish with a maroon base; the center of the flower is yellow.

Habitat:

Open, well-lit areas, including lawns and roadsides.
