Desert checkered skipper

Burnsius philetas

Description:

Dark brown skipper with white markings. The wingspan is 25–29 mm. Recent genetic work in 2019 has prompted the new genus Burnsius, which contains 12 related species formerly in the genus Pyrgus (see article below in comments from Bayucca). This change is also expressed in my references.

Habitat:

Spotted nectaring at the Falcon Lake State Park butterfly garden in Starr County, Texas.

Notes:

The larva feeds on several plants in the family Malvaceae, including Malvastrum and Sida. Adults feed on flower nectar.
