Golden Silk Spider: aka "banana spider"- female

Nephila clavipes

Description:

5 to 6 inch diameter spider with a bright orange abomen with white speckles. Black and orange banded legs.

Habitat:

Web was located between two bald cypress trees in a manmade bald cypress stand near a retention pond in a shopping center. Located where a good breeze is always blowing.

I agree it's a banana spider . And yes females can get 5 inches if you count the legspan. Bodies can be 1-3 inches. Hard to imagine such an impressive creature has venom LESS dangerous than a honey- bee's, eh? Love these spiders!

It was quite large. I guess a banana spider but not sure. These guys are fearsome looking and all over the east coast of Florida.

from tip of legs in front to tip of legs in rear. Probably should try to get reference items in pics when I can. THis was in my way while trying to get the hawk picture this morning.

Pretty large from memory. I was 4 feet away due to lens. Lets say 4 to 5. large as a DVD disk would be a way of looking at it.

Michael, are you sure that this spider was 5-6 inches in diameter? That seems quite large.
