Handsome Fungus Beetle

eumorphus marginatus

Description:

These 3 fungus beetles were found on the underside of an Alder Bracket fungus (inonotus radiatus) They are about 2cm long and 1.5cm wide. They can be easily identified by their circular shape and black body with four orange dots. This is a mutualistic, symbiotic relationship because the beetles help transport the fungus spores to grow on new trees and the fungus protects the beetle and it's larvae.

Habitat:

Underneath a Alder Bracket fungus in secondary rainforest.

You found this too? Nice! I didn't think anyone else would, it was a wierd angle. I had to lay on the ground to take it! Now that I think about it though maybe this isn't a Handsome Fungus Beetle. The HFB is supposed to have orange spots. We both saw yellow ones though... hmmm...
