North American Beaver

Castor canadensis

Description:

Large animal, that feeds on tree bark. With a pronounced flat hairless tail, that it will slap the water with to warn other beavers.

Habitat:

Most waterways and some lakes. Lives in houses (Dens) it makes or up under banks of waterways. Very aquatic and seldom out of the water in daylight hours. Mostly nocturnal.

Notes:

Nearly wiped out, but with new introduction, is prospering. Can be a pest, cutting trees down on river banks. Will ring out a tree and eventually cut it down. I have several old growth cottonwood trees that have either fallen or are ringed out to several inches. They seem to like maple trees and have killed all that are on my river bank.
