Southern long-nosed armadillo

Dasypus hybridus

Description:

The southern long nosed armadillo - "mulita" as we call it - can be found all over Uruguay. It lives in burrows and is very active during night and day. They are grey with some sort of browinish hair scattered here and there and they are about 25 to 50 centimetres long. The average "mulitas" weigh between 1, 5 and 2 kilograms. They have seven bands on the body which they can move.

Habitat:

All around Uruguay, southern Brazil and northern Argentina. Although these animals are not allowed to hunt unfortunatelly some people still hunt them, they are now considered a near threatened species.

Notes:

I spotted this cute and friendly little one while walking along the countryside. It came right upto me, sniffed a while, stood on its rear legs to my delight and left. I love this animal =) I took some other pictures but I will upload it into wikipedia as the page there does not have a picture.
