Northern Water Snake

Nerodia sipedon

Description:

Northern Water Snake Eating a large catfish

Habitat:

Lake

Notes:

I watched this snake catch a large catfish and then watched it drag it ashore to drown it so it could eat it. I was with a group of children, when the snake felt threatened it went back towards the water. We left it, then returned to see it managing to eat the fish quite well. It headed back into the water at the end of the meal with the tail of the fish still swinging in the mouth of the snake.
