Gophersnake

Pituophis catenifer sayi

Description:

Bullsnakes are among our longest snakes; I've seen them longer than five feet long. They tend to be a dirty yellow with darker brown, black and red scales. They are constrictors that feed primarily on ground squirrels and ground nesting birds.

Habitat:

Grasslands.

Notes:

I was laying on the ground watching a bullsnake hunting in and out of ground squirrel burrows around me, when I became aware of this second bullsnake approaching. I laid very still and he (or maybe this was a she?) slid past just a couple of feet away and into the burrow that the first snake had just entered. Eventually both emerged and entwined themselves a couple of time and went down another burrow. This repeated several times before they finally disappeared for good.
