Black Witch Moth

Ascalapha odorata

Description:

A large moth that is mottled brown with hints of iridescent purple and pink. This is a male since it lacks the white crossbar (thanks J for the info!). They can be up to 16 cm, and I'm pretty sure that's how big this one is. Was the biggest moth by far that I had ever seen!

Habitat:

They are found from the southern US through Central America in mostly tropical areas.
