Gall Wasp nest

Amphibolips quercusspongifica

Description:

Large, nearly golf ball sized gall. Bumpy exterior with an exit hole. Internally, a mesh-like material. Detachable from leaves. Gall is formed when tiny wasps lay their eggs in the host plant (Oak in this case). The larvae grow up inside and eventually pupate inside the gall.

Habitat:

Connetquot State Park, NY. Forms on Oak leaves.

Notes:

I saw several of these in the leaf litter while hiking. This one was in the best condition (before I broke it open). If my ID is not correct please let me know. It's my best guess!
