Boschniakia rossica

Description:

Parasitic plant with maroon flowers. They do not contain chlorophyll, so they are obligate parasites (holoparasites). They resemble a pinecone from afar, hence the name. Very plentiful in the summer here and the blackened, dead flower stalks persist well into winter.

Habitat:

Sitka Spruce forest with mossy understory

Notes:

This species parasitizes on several species, specializing in alders (Alnus). Other species it can parasitize includes birch (Betula), Willow (Salix), Blueberries (Vaccinium), spruce (Picea), and Leatherleaf shrub (Chamaedaphne), all of which occur in Kodiak
