Adult: forewing dark orange or brown crossed by 3 or 4 darker lines; reniform spot mostly white (some individuals show no white); ST line wavy, stops short of apex; diffuse pale patch usually present at apex; hindwing is dark brownish-gray.
Eastern two-thirds of US and southeastern half of Canada. This one was photographed in Edgefield County, SC.
Adults fly from July to September. Larvae feed on low-growing plants such as dandelion and plantain.
