Pavon emperor (female)

Doxocopa pavon

Description:

Pavon emperors are sexually dimorphic. The female is dark brown with a wide white median band across both wings but does not reach the leading edge of the forewing. Yellow spots near the top of the forewing tips. Underside seen in pic3. Males are predominantly brown overlaid with a vividly iridescent bluish purple. Wingspans between 5.6 to 6.9 cm (2.2 to 2.7 in).

Habitat:

Spotted at the National Butterfly Garden in Mission, Texas.

Notes:

Range from Central America to Mexico. Strays into LRGV like this one.
