Variable Oakleaf Caterpillar

Lochmaeus manteo

The final instar of the variable oakleaf caterpillar, probably getting ready for its flight in October. The defensive spray from the nodes on this little things shoulders can blister human skin, so handle with care!

Found on the low reaching branches of a laurel oak tree, near dusk in mid September.
