Gallinula chloropus
This bird belongs to the Rallidae family. It has dark plumage, apart from the white undertail, yellow legs and a red frontal shield.
Found in marshes and well-vegetated lakes, in many parts of the Old World.

Desmond, you should have them in California on freshwater lakes near the coasts as well as just about anywhere in the SE USA. They are quite timid and quick to hide in dense reeds but you can see a flash of white under the tail as they disappear.
Very nice species, i would love to see one someday.
