Colobura dirce
This is one of the butterflies in which the underside of the wings is more beautiful and interesting than the topside, which is a dull black with a cream or yellow stripe across the forewing.
The larvae feed on Cecropia species, so it will be found in the vicinity of Cecropias, and in this case it came to my butterfly fruit bowl (where I put overripe fruit to see what comes) a few feet from a cecropia tree just off my veranda in the rainforest midcanopy.
It likes bananas, but here it is sucking on a melocoton, which looks like a large sausage and smells/tastes like cantaloup.
