Crane Fly with Proboscis

Limonia (Geranomyia) sp.

Description:

A very small Crane Fly of the Family Limoniidae. It is another of the rather rare kind with a long proboscis instead of the usual snout. It was hanging from the roof of a porch.

Habitat:

Semi-urban area on the outskirts of San Cristobal de Las Casas, 2,200 meters.

Notes:

While many if not most Crane Flies do not feed as adults, the species of Limonia (subgenus Geranomyia) feed on nectar using their long proboscis.
