Ocellated Turkey

Meleagris ocellata

Description:

Unmistakably a turkey, with iridescent eyed feathers.

Habitat:

These birds were photographed wandering freely around the base of the ruins at Tikal, Guatemala, foraging in the grass for insects and seeds. They were approachable within five feet.

Notes:

Where I live in the Maya Mts. of western Belize, they are much shyer, seldom seen, usually only at dawn or dusk in dense underbrush.
