Viceroy Butterfly

Limenitis archippus

Description:

Mimics Monarch butterflies for protection from would-be predators. Orange butterfly with bold black bands along vein lines, white dots line wing edges. Bold black line crosses bottom of bottom wings which distinguishes it from a Monarch butterfly.

Habitat:

Area is a gated man-made lake community, surrounded by rural agricultural land, and some deciduous forest areas. In areas that are not mowed, the land is old fields within the community, and are mowed biannually. Ditchlines and treelines are left untouched.
