Hen of the Woods

Grifola frondosa

Description:

Brown, grey, and tan polypore mushroom that can grown to very large sizes. Very edible, and often sought after by edible mushroom enthusiasts.

Habitat:

Woodland habitat. Found at the base of dead oak tree.

Notes:

Found this and another individual on two different oaks. These are my favorite edible mushrooms. They made for a nice fall treat! Very meaty texture and a very pleasant, earthy taste.
