Lemur Leaf Frog

Agalychnis lemur

Description:

Classified as Critically Endangered by the IUCN. Found in Costa Rica, Panama and Colombia. Females to 5.3cm, long and spindly legs with huge eyes, nocturnal

Habitat:

rainforests, 400 - 1600m in elevation

Notes:

This species was always considered uncommon in Costa Rica but underwent a drastic, 80% population decline in recent decades, mostly due to the Chytrid Fungus that attacks amphibians. Thanks to the efforts at the Costa Rican Amphibian Research Centre, this species is making a slow comeback. I was lucky enough to spot a few individuals with an expert guide during an epic 5 hour night hike.
