Leaf Mimic Bush Cricket

Pseudophyllus sp.

Description:

Tettigonidae; Pseudophyllinae; Pseudophyllini; Pseudophyllus sp. This Bush Cricket is a Leaf Mimic and it is very effective in doing just that. I was lucky to spot it because it was so flat against the leaf, it looked like a small leaf which had fallen onto the larger one. When it was startled by the camera flash, it adopted a warning posture by raising up its posterior to reveal a bright yellow colour which is probably to make a predator think that it is unpalatable.

Habitat:

I spotted this Leaf Mimic on foliage along the roadside when I was out on a "bug Hunt" in the nearby hills. The surroundings mostly consisted of small patches of forest, some grazing land for water buffaloes and cattle, small coconut plantations and a few small mango plantations. There is very little human settlement there.
