Festive Midget Moth

Elaphria festivoides

Description:

The Festive Midget is a species of moth of the Noctuidae family. Adult: distinct whitish reniform spot interrupts broad black dash in median area of forewing. Lower PM line also whitish. Rest of forewing brown - lighter brown with gray mottling near base and along costa, darker beyond PM line. Hindwing pale to dark grayish-brown. Forewing length 8.5-12 mm.

Habitat:

Range is British Columbia to Newfoundland, south throughout eastern United States to Florida. North Dakota to New Mexico and Texas. Adults fly from February to October.

Notes:

Larval host is Box-elder, (Acer negundo). At least two generations per year (whereas the more northerly E. alapallida has one generation per year). Hodges 9681
