Hmm I find that to be really poor judgement on their part. Lack of science is not an excuse at all to dismiss a species. Even more of a reason to not call it one or the other and just say it could be either one!

This is true, technically. Although the status of H. chrysoscelis is poorly understood in New York state, and the current NY herp atlas is recording all gray treefrogs as versicolor until more studies are done.

There is actually no way you can tell this is a gray tree frog from this photo. This is either a gray tree frog or a cope's gray tree frog, but they are visually indistinguishable from each other and both highly variable, as well as both being found in the area.

This is a gray treefrog that has just transformed from a tadpole. Spring peepers are tan/goldish, with an X shaped marking on the back.
