Umbrella magnolia

Magnolia tripetala

Description:

An understory tree that only grows to about 15 m tall. I found a few of them along the river trail that day. What caught my eye was the exceptionally large leaves, which can grow 30–50 cm long and this is where it gets its common name the Umbrella magnolia.

Habitat:

Spotted along the Little Missouri River in the Ouachita Mountains of Arkansas.

Notes:

From Wikipedia: The tree has reddish cone-shaped fruit, is shade tolerant, has shallow spreading roots, and is pollinated by beetles.
