European Ground Beetle

Carabus nemoralis

Description:

About an inch long. Pits in its wing covers. Purple highlights all around wing covers and head when the light hits it. Rather fast when spooked.

Habitat:

Found all across northern North America. It's a highly synanthropic species. Likes cultivated ground such as parks and gardens.

Notes:

Cool little beetle. Doesn't do very well when being chased. It has a tendency to flip over on its back. It might be a slug eater.
