Black Nerite

Nerita atramentosa

Description:

Many of these were found on small rocky areas near an ocean beach at low tide. They were about 20mm diameter, mostly matte black, segment-shaped shell. No self-movement was noted over about 15 minutes.

Habitat:

Ocean/bay beach on a small patch of sedimentary rocks.

Notes:

Nerita Melanerita atramentosa = correct name? Mollusca : Gastropoda : Neritopsina : Neritidae Nerita atramentosa (Reeve, 1855) - common name the black nerite. Black Nerites are found in southern Australia and I think New Zealand. Usually in intertidal areas of coastal rocky shores. http://www.molluscsoftasmania.net/Specie...

Hmm... I didn't think of that ! Sorry if my temporary 'handles' are confusing Keith. This one's fixed anyway. :)
