Common Redpoll

Acanthis flammea

Description:

The Common Redpoll is from 5 to 5 1/2 inches. Pale, brown streaked, with a bright red cap and a black chin. Male has a pink breast. It is usually in flocks from 5 to 100 and more. They feed on seeds from trees (today it was the yellow birch) and have been hanging-out with the Pine Siskin.

Habitat:

Tundra and dwarf arctic birch in summer, bushy pastures, open thickets. These little birds were in a feverish activity as they tore the seeds apart and rushed to the ground to pick the seeds up.
