Bluet

Houstonia spp.

Description:

Bluets are often small and delicate. Flowers may be blue, purple, lavender, white, or rose, often with shades of one color present in a single population. Flowers have four sepals, a salverform corolla with four lobes, and an inferior ovary.

Riparian meadow

Notes:

The bluet (Houstonia spp.) is a member of the madder family (Rubiaceae) and a delightful surprise of spring. Texas is blessed with seven of the 20 North American species of these showy little annuals.
