Southern Red-billed Hornbill

Tockus rufirostris

Description:

This red-billed hornbill was spotted at sunrise near the west entrance to Kruger National Park in South Africa.

Habitat:

The habitat is flat thornveld, at the edge of sparse woodland. Winter weather was about 45 degrees F.

Notes:

The habitat became even sparser as we waited for the park to open as a troop of elephants came through and knocked/pulled down a small grove of thorny trees.
