Greater kudu, Tragelaphus strepsiceros
This imposing antelope was solitary, as is the tendency for males.. Our vehicle approached on the road to within fifty feet, and it stood posing, motionless for several minutes I'd estimate it was about 6' at the shoulder, with a brown and white mane on the UNDERside of its neck a dark face, narrow vertical white stripes on its sides, and a white chevron between the eyes. The spiraled horns were at least 2' long.
It was spotted in a brushy clearing beneath tall trees along a river bank in Kruger National Park..
There are estimated to be 11,200 – 17,300 greater kudu in Kruger National Park.
