Scaly-breasted Munia aka Nutmeg Mannikin

Lonchura punctulata

Cinnamon back and head, tail is a lighter color and face is darker. Breast has white feathers with dark edges that make them look like scales. Bill is similar to a Grosbeak. Though from Asia, some found in North America are either escapees or introduced. This pair was found in the San Jose area and is building a nest so hopefully they will take hold.

This was found along a creek and is favoring and nesting in an oak bush.

Last week these were spotted picking leaves to create a nest. Today I spotted the male trimming very long blades of grass (#3 & #4 photos)
These birds have made the ABA list in 2013 and in 2014 name was changed from the Nutmeg Mannikin
