Javelina

Pecari tajacu

Description:

Small, pig-like mammal with brown fur. There is a faint collar around the neck, which is how they get their name 'collared peccary'. Their fur stands up when they are frightened as you can see in the 1st photo (another javelina started chasing it)!

Habitat:

This herd was hanging out on a manicured lawn of a college campus at the edge of town. Not exactly the place you would expect to see these guys, but they were a bit more used to people so I was able to get decent shots finally!

Great photos Ashley !

Your spotting has been nominated for the Spotting of the Week. The winner will be chosen by the Project Noah Rangers based on a combination of factors including: uniqueness of the shot, status of the organism (for example, rare or endangered), quality of the information provided in the habitat and description sections. There is a subjective element, of course; the spotting with the highest number of Ranger votes is chosen. Congratulations on being nominated!
