Anas rhynchotis
This beautiful medium sized duck is 45-55cm long. males weigh in up to 750gms with females about 50gms lighter. The male shows a grey, slightly iridescent head and neck, with a white cheek stripe and yellow eye. The breast is white speckled with black, the sides are a rich chestnut speckled with black.There is also a diagnostic white thigh patch. The female is a mottled brown. Both have the spectacular spatulate bill.
Found throughout both main islands of New Zealand. Also in southern Australia. These birds roosting in the Manukau Harbour in Auckland.
The last image also shows a pair of Grey Teal in the background to save any confusion.
